About

With approximately 4,500 students and 160 professors, aided and abetted by over 100 contract lecturers and more than 300 technicians and administrative staff, the Hochschule Mannheim is one of the largest universities of applied sciences in the Federal state of Baden-Württemberg. The engineering departments (Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Process Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Information Technology) continued from the former Mannheim School of Engineering, established back in 1898. Most of the graduate programs offered still center around these subjects.

With all the assets of a modern university campus, the Hochschule Mannheim provides students with ideal conditions for squaring up to the requirements posed by the professional careers they have set their sights on. For many years the Hochschule Mannheim has been one of the most research-intensive universities of applied sciences in Baden-Württemberg. As such, it enables its students to participate in a wide range of research and development projects prior to graduation.

Language requirements

The language requirements depend on the degree program that you’re interested in:

  • Exchange students should have a basic command of German as well as a sound knowledge of English, enough to participate successfully in lectures and to communicate in the laboratories. The proficiency level required for both languages is identified in the respective agreements (usually B1).
  • International programs taught in English require high language proficiency (see the respective prerequisites).
  • For admission to a regular bachelor's or master's degree program, either a German school-leaving certificate or the official proof of language proficiency is required by law (see FAQ).
  • Special requirements apply for some international programs, i.e. that applicants either need no previous knowledge of German or B1 level before enrolling. In such cases, the DSH is obligatory to be granted the degree, e.g. students have to pass the language exam before finishing their studies.

Student Housing

The International Office provides accommodation in student housing for exchange students of our partner universities overseas. However, the number of available dormitory rooms is very limited.  Studierendenwerk Mannheim acts as landlord for student housing.

Location

The residence halls of the Studierendenwerk Mannheim are located all throughout the city. The university can be reached directly by public transport from all residence halls. The International Office has a contingent of dormitory rooms in five of the residence halls of the Studierendenwerk.

Types of Rooms

Most students in student housing live in shared apartments. All students living in a shared apartment have their own bedroom, but share the kitchen and bathroom. Between two and eight students live in a shared apartment. Only students of the same gender will share a two-bedroom apartment, all other shared apartments are mixed-gender. There is also a very small number of single apartments available. Single apartments are equipped with a personal kitchen and bathroom.

Appliances and Equipment

The student housing kitchens are equipped with a hot plate and refrigerator. There are no ovens. Not all shared apartments have dishes. You can bring your own set of dishes (a cup, a plate, cutlery, etc.) or buy some in Mannheim. Toilet paper, dish soap, detergent, etc. will not be provided. You will have to buy these household articles yourself. Every residence hall has a laundry room with washers and dryers. You may pay for washing and drying using your ecUM (student ID).

All dormitory rooms for exchange students are fully furnished. The rooms contain a bed, cupboard, desk, chair, bookshelf, sink (not all), the necessary ports for TV/phone and a cable Internet connection.

Costs

Rent, including utilities*: about EUR 295 to EUR 450

*Utilities: Water, heating, electricity, Internet
