Jacobs University Bremen welcomes the Schaffhausen Institute of Technology!

Founded in February 1999 with the support of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen, the University of Bremen and Rice University, the “International University Bremen” (IUB) started its first academic year in 2001. Since its founding, the private, English-speaking, campus university has been committed to its core principles: excellence in research and teaching, being a driver of innovation, maintaining a broad portfolio of academic programs, fostering a vibrant community, and hosting a campus that is a home away from home for its international student body.

Currently, its more than 1,500 students come from more than 110 countries with around 80% having relocated to Germany for their studies. Jacobs University’s research projects are funded by the German Research Foundation, or the EU Research and Innovation program, as well as by global leading companies. The high quality of research and teaching at Jacobs University Bremen has been repeatedly confirmed by renowned national and international university rankings. In the “Young University Rankings 2021” of the British magazine “Times Higher Education” (THE) for universities under the age of 50, Jacobs University placed 27th among 475 universities from 68 countries participating worldwide. In a Germany-wide comparison, it is among the top two young universities.

In 2006, the Jacobs Foundation in Zurich announced an investment of 200 million euros, at that time being the largest donation in Europe ever made to a university. To honor this commitment, the name of the university was changed in early 2007: International University Bremen became Jacobs University Bremen.

After a long, trusting and successful partnership, the Jacobs Foundation gave up its role as Jacobs University’s majority shareholder at the end of 2020, with the intention to undertake a strategic realignment and set new thematic priorities for its future work, as per its “Strategy 2030.” Despite exiting the university’s shareholder structure, the Jacobs Foundation honored its financial commitments to the university by advancing a payment of 63 million Swiss Francs ahead of schedule, thus ensuring Jacobs University's liquidity and continued operations for the upcoming years.

The Jacobs Foundation transferred its majority shares in Jacobs University gGmbH to the "Verein zur Förderung der wissenschaftlichen Forschung in Bremen e.V." (VFwF – Society for the promotion of scientific research in the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen) as of the end of 2020.

Based on a resolution of the Senate of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen, the sale of the majority shares held by the VFwF in Jacobs University gGmbH to a new investor is to take place by the end of September 2021.

Intensive negotiations between Jacobs University, the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen and various investors began in late 2020, with the strategic aim of enabling Jacobs University to operate independently – both financially and academically – at the Bremen-Nord site in the long term.

Jacobs University has experienced many phases in its young history, while maintaining its core principles and its mission: To be a place of inspiration and above all to provide excellent education. Studying in an international community, obtaining a qualification to work on responsible tasks in a digitized and globalized society, learning, researching and teaching across academic disciplines and countries, strengthening people and markets with innovative solutions and advanced training programs: This is what Jacobs University Bremen has stood for during the past 20 years – and this is what the university will continue to stand for in the future together with its new majority shareholder, the Schaffhausen Institute of Technology Genossenschaft.
