Weymouth is a charming seaside town in the south west of England, in the stunning county of Dorset. This small town is packed with things to do and places to go. The picturesque Weymouth harbor offers you amazing views of fishing and sailing boats as well as many cafes, restaurants and shops.
Weymouth English Centre is a friendly, family-run school located close to the town center. The school offers English language courses for teenagers aged between 13 and 17.
There are classes from lower elementary level up to advanced. They will put you in a class of the right level after you have done the spoken and written tests on the first day.
The main objectives are to improve your communication skills, expand your vocabulary and develop your fluency, accuracy and confidence in using the language in everyday situations.
There are excellent facilities including interactive whiteboards in most classrooms, a computer suite, a canteen, sports hall, theatre and music and dance studios. Their students also have free access to the college's wireless internet system.
Courses
How many lessons will I have?
Students will have 15 full hours of English lessons each week on the standard course and 19 hours on the intensive course. This includes the written and oral test, needs analysis and induction on the first day. Lessons are usually from 09:00 to 12:30 with a total break time of 30 minutes but may occasionally take place in the afternoon from 13:30 to 17:00 with a total break time of 30 minutes.
There is a lot of speaking and listening in the lessons. They also cover vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, reading and writing.
What methods do they use?
Teachers use a very flexible approach that combines various methodologies. In particular this includes communicative and skills-based approaches. Students often work in pairs or in small groups so they have a chance to speak as much English as possible. Games, songs, short videos, role-plays, discussions, mini debates, project work and drama techniques are used extensively to encourage the students to use the language they have learnt. Project work helps you to improve your language skills and to learn more about British life and customs.
Will I get a certificate?
On the last day you will receive a certificate. You will also receive a written report on the progress you have made during the course.
Activities
Students at the English summer camp have activities each afternoon from Monday to Friday, as well as on four weekday evenings. Each Saturday there is a full day trip. All the costs of the program of activities are included in the course price.
There are lots of different activities with sports like tennis, beach volleyball, football etc. a disco, bowling, a boat trip, go-karting, laser quest and many more. Saturday trips can be to London, Oxford, Bath, Salisbury & Stonehenge and others. You can find more of the activities below.
Accommodation
You will stay with a carefully-selected English homestay as a member of the family. Unless you ask for something different, you will be the only guest of your native language. Accommodation is sharing a twin room with a student of a different nationality. If they do not have a suitable student for you to share a room with, they will put you in a single room at no extra cost. You can book a single room at a weekly supplement (please see the dates and prices page for details).
Accommodation is booked through an agency which has been arranging student accommodation in Weymouth for over eighteen years. Great care is taken in choosing hosts where their students will get the attention and supervision they need when away from their parents.
All the hosts have been inspected by the agency. They are chosen for their caring attitude and friendly manner. On your first full day they will ask you whether you are happy with your homestay and will sort any problems or questions you may have. They will check again regularly that you are happy with everything.
