Tomsk State University

Tomsk State University, established on May 28, 1878 by the Supreme Decree of Alexander II as the Imperial Siberian University, is the first higher educational institution in the Asian part of Russia, which marked the beginning of the development of education, science and culture in the vast territory stretching from the Urals to the Pacific Ocean. It was he who was entrusted with the high mission of training the scientific, pedagogical and cultural elite of Siberia and the Far East.

From the first years of its existence, Tomsk Imperial (later – Tomsk State) University inextricably linked the learning process with the scientific activities of its teachers, developed as a research-type university. Even then, it was assumed that the process of transferring and spreading knowledge here would be constantly connected with the acquisition of new knowledge, with fundamental and applied research in key areas of the physical and mathematical, natural, humanitarian, and social sciences. Accordingly, by the end of the XIX – beginning of the XX century, the university formed the foundations of the first scientific and pedagogical schools in the field of medicine, physics and mathematics, natural sciences, and humanities.
