Pavel Jozef Šafarik University is renowned university based in Košice, the second biggest city in Slovakia. It was founded in 1959 and is the second oldest university in Slovakia (after Commenius University in Bratislava). Its ancestor, Universitas Cassoviensis (or University of Košice) was founded in 1657 and shared good name of educational institutions in Slovakia since 17th century.
Nowadays, University of Pavel Jozef Šafárik is alma mater of almost 9000 students and 760 pedagogical or research academicians. There are foreign students from more than 40 countries around the world.
Main goal of Pavol Jozef Šafárik University is to share tertiary education in accordance with the newest science knowledge in broad international context, according to european trends, Bologna declaration and other documents.
University is named after Slovak poet, Slavist, etnograph and historician Pavel Jozef Šafárik. He dedicated the most productive years of his professional career to development of school system in various places in Europe.
