Kyungpook National University (KNU) in South Korea began life as a regional education hub founded with the support of residents, and quickly gained a reputation as one of the best universities south of Seoul.
The university is located in Daegu, the fourth largest city in the country, and received its university status in 1951.
The university is popular with international students due to its low tuition fees. Around 40% of undergraduate and 80% of postgraduate international students receive scholarships to help with tuition fees, and their travel and living costs.
KNU’s graduates are highly sought after by employers and the South Korean Ministry of Education previously ranked the university first among large regional universities for graduate employment across two successive years, in 2011 and 2012.
The institution also prides itself on high standards of teaching, a global outlook and a culture of innovation. Its alumni includes the former South Korean president Park Chung-hee.
In terms of accommodation, dormitories are available for international students and domestic students attending KNU from outside the city. Each dormitory comes equipped with a gym, recreation hall, meeting rooms, computer labs and laundry facilities.
Daegu is only a two hour train journey to Seoul. As a city, it manages to strike a balance between modernity and tradition, where business and industry sit alongside famous UNESCO world heritage sites such as the ancient city of Gyeongju and the Haeinsa Temple.
