Comenius University is the oldest and the biggest university in Slovakia, since it was founded in 1919. University is situated in Bratislava (during 1939 and 1954 university changed name to Slovak University), with exception of the Jessenius Faculty of Medicine in Martin. It is the oldest and biggest university in Slovakia, that follows tradition of Academia Istropolitana, first higher education institution within current area of Slovakia.

University plays important role in development of education, science and culture in Slovakia. Its centers for excellence (e.g. Centre of Excellence for Translational Research in Molecular Medicine, Center of excellence for the design, preparation and diagnosis of nanostructures for electronics and photonics) have various objectives such as support of research and development, development of research in Bratislava Region and support of an applied research, development and technology transfer.

Comenius University is among TOP 500 universities worldwide and is internationally recognized center of science and research. It has 13 faculties and more than 20 pedagogical, science and other workplaces or special facilities. There are 27.000 students (from which 21.000 are full-time students) and also alma mater for around 1900 international students from 70 different countries. Students may choose from 680 study programs – plenty of them are in English, German or French.
