Heidelberg, our city

Heidelberg, once the capital of the Palatinate Electorate  and the spiritual center of Calvinism, is located in the attractive Neckar Valley and is characterized by a particularly mild climate. Heidelberg's beauty has attracted many poets, painters and scientists throughout history. In the early 19th century, the city on the Neckar became the most important  center of German late romanticism . The poets Arnim, Brentano, Goethe and Eichendorff are inextricably linked to this era.

The  Ruprecht-Karls University of Heidelberg, the oldest university in Germany, "confirmed its top position among the best universities in Germany in 2017 and was able to hold its own in a global comparison with strong rankings.

Numerous monuments bear witness to the checkered history of the Neckar metropolis. The city's landmark lies about 70 meters above the Neckar on the slope of its local mountain, the Königstuhl. The ruins of the electoral  castle  are among the most impressive things you can admire on a trip to Germany (in 2016 the castle was one of the most popular travel destinations in Germany for foreign holidaymakers).

Anyone who climbs up to the castle first comes through the gate into the garden, the famous "Hortus Palatinus", which was laid out at the beginning of the 17th century. From the castle garden you have a wonderful view of Heidelberg and the  Philosophenweg opposite . In the inner courtyard of the castle, the buildings from different eras are fascinating.

During a tour of the  old town  , the baroque town houses with their richly ornamented facades and portals are particularly eye-catching. The center of the old town is the market square with the Protestant Church of the Holy Spirit and the magnificent Renaissance building "Zum Ritter". Below the Heiliggeistkirche you will find many old streets with pubs and restaurants. The "Old Bridge" leading over the Neckar is one of the most beautiful stone bridges in Germany.

The surrounding area with the castles in the Neckar Valley, the German Wine Route, the old cultural landscape of the Upper Rhine and the mountains of the Odenwald offers many adventure opportunities. The proximity to the Frankfurt, Karlsruhe and Stuttgart airports makes Heidelberg easily accessible for guests from all over the world.

Culture in and around Heidelberg

Heidelberg is one of the leading  cultural centers  in Germany, numerous museums and theaters bear witness to this. Literature is omnipresent in the city, and since December 2014 Heidelberg has held the honorary title " Unesco City of Literature ". Together with its neighboring cities in the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region (Mannheim, Ludwigshafen, Speyer, Schwetzingen, Worms, to name the most important ones), Heidelberg and the surrounding area offer a wide variety of cultural events of national importance:
