Kyung Hee University is one of the best private universities encompassing an educational system from kindergarten to graduate school. Kyung Hee University has 24 colleges, 82 departments and majors, 65 master’s and 63 doctorate programs, 18 professional and special graduate schools, and 43 auxiliary research institutions. Kyung Hee University has Kyung Hee Cyber University (KHCU), which shares a university campus.

Kyung Hee was founded in 1949 by Dr. Young Seek Choue, first president of Kyung Hee University,whose founding philosophy was “Toward a New Civilization.” The university hosted the 1968 conference of the International Association of University Presidents, first proposed in 1981 the UN International Day of Peace, organized the 1999 Seoul International Conference of NGOs, held the 2009 World Civic Forum, ran the 2011 UNAI-Kyung Hee International Symposium, and has spearheaded the Global Common Society movement. The university celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2009. The anniversary of Kyung Hee University is on May 18.

In 1993 Kyung Hee received the UNESCO Prize for Peace Education. In 2006, Kyung Hee and the University of Pennsylvania initiated the Penn-Kyung Hee Collaborative Summer Program, and two years later a formal Global Collaborative with Peking, Ritsumeikan, and Moscow State universities; the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs; and the Conference of NGOs (CoNGO).

Kyung Hee’s interdisciplinary bio-medical cluster maintains one of the world’s leading research programs for the study of oriental medicine and its application to contemporary medical treatment in tandem with Western approaches, including the world’s first successful drug-free acupunctural anesthesia demonstration in 1972.

The Central Library on Kyung Hee University’s Seoul Campus opened with 700 books donated by Dr. Young Seek Choue in 1951 in a temporary building in Busan amidst the Korean War. The current building is made of stone and was completed on June 13, 1968. As of October 2011, it had about 1.33 million books and 32,000 electronic journals. The library also hosted the second meeting of the International Association of University Presidents in 1968.

The Graduate School of Kyung Hee University was established in 1954. Its educational goals are to provide maximum support for and guarantee the self-discipline of the study of creative and scholarly studies. Through the whole person education, emotional education, science education, democratic education, qualified personnel to cultivate social needs. To cultivate talents with independent research capabilities, cultivate talents with international competitiveness, and make contributions to building a democratic and welfare society.

Each semester since December 2011, Kyung Hee University has sent exchange students to sister universities throughout the world. There are 529 overseas exchange universities in 78 countries including Harvard University, Cambridge University, Berkeley University, and Tokyo University. Various types of scholarships are available and students are sent for one semester or one year, depending on their majors. Approximately 500 students are chosen to participate each year. It has been acknowledged to be one of the top 5 exchange programs in Korea.

Seoul Campus

Sameuiwon Dormitory

Located on the Seoul campus, Sameuiwon is a newly renovated dormitory complex that can accommodate 392 students. Both Korean and international students may opt to live in this dormitory. The rooms are equipped with beds, desks, cabinets, air conditioners, LAN, and land phones for the comfort of students. Generally four students share each room

Sewhawon Dormitory

Partially funded by the Korean government, this new residential hall opened in March 2005 with the most up-to-date facilities. It can accommodate a total of 432 students. Two students share a room with a toilet and bathtub.

Global Campus

Woojungwon

Woojungwon opened in August 1998 on the Global Campus as Korea’s first studio-style dormitory and accommodates 1,943 residents. It has seven floors above ground and one floor underground and is equipped with department store exclusively for students and a spacious cafeteria.

The 2nd Dormitory

Constructed in 2008, the 2nd Dormitory on the Global Campus consists of two buildings that are equipped with the best quality facilities and residential space. The A wing for female students has ten floors above ground and one underground floor while the B wing for male students has 13 floors above ground and 1 underground. Together, they accommodate 2,190 people.
