Accommodation

Living in University accommodation gives our international students security and their family back home peace of mind. What's more, we offer guaranteed accommodation to international students who meet certain criteria.

As an international student coming to Manchester for the first time, you’ll benefit from the opportunity to live and study alongside British students, in a safe and welcoming environment.

With over 8,000 rooms, we offer a variety of types, costs and locations. Much of our accommodation is very near to the main University buildings and all of it is within two miles (three kilometers) of our campus.

Halls and facilities

The range of halls and types of room we offer is extensive: from modern self-catering flats through to traditional college-style catered halls of residence. You are assured of your privacy as all rooms are single occupancy.

Both single and mixed-sex accommodations are available, and there is the option of en suite or shared bathroom facilities. We offer specially adapted rooms for students with disabilities. All rooms have an Internet connection.

Facilities vary between halls, but many have their own social areas, libraries, music rooms and sports facilities.

Fees

University accommodation represents great value for money. Residency fees cover Internet connection, personal possessions insurance and all utility services. As an example, fees for 2018/19, based on a 40–42 week letting period, are:

  • £98–£111 per week for a single self-catering room with shared facilities;
  • £140–£150 per week for a single self-catering room with en-suite facilities;
  • £135–£152 per week for a single room with shared facilities in a catered hall.

Fees vary according to hall and/or room facilities.

Safety and support

Student safety is one of our highest priorities. Security guards patrol 24 hours a day and cameras are located throughout the campus. Most halls have student swipe-card entry systems and each residence has a team of wardens and tutors who live within the hall to offer help and guidance.

Student Services and Facilities

Libraries and Information Services

  • The University of Manchester Library is one of only five National Research Libraries. Eleven site libraries house over 4.2 million printed books and manuscripts; and the Alan Gilbert Learning Common is open 24/7.
  • The library's entire catalogue of books and journals can be searched via its website, providing access to over 40,000 e-journals and 430,000 e-books as well as printed books and journals.
  • A wide range of support and services are available to students, researchers, and academics.

Student jobs

  • There are many opportunities to find part-time work in Manchester, both in the city and on campus.
  • The university offers students help in securing part-time work and volunteering roles.
  • An online vacancies database exclusive to Manchester students advertises thousands of job opportunities all year round.

Careers advice

  • The Careers Service offers practical skills development through courses and workshops, careers fairs, professional tailored support via face-to-face appointments, group workshops and online resources, advice on the UK and global job market and access to one of the largest career-mentoring programmes in the UK.
  • With close contacts and collaborations with companies and major employers, the Careers Service also provides support with internships and placements.

Disability support

  • If students have additional needs arising from a medical condition, physical or sensory disability, specific learning differences such as dyslexia, or a mental health difficulty that affects their study, the Disability Advisory and Support Service can help access the support required at university.

Students' Union

  • The University of Manchester is home to the UK's biggest Students' Union, offering an independent advice service, shops, a food market and a bar offering student-friendly prices.
  • There are more than 450 clubs and societies run for students by students, ranging from subject-related societies, to sport clubs, and those that are just for fun.

The Students' Union also has some of the UK's best student media, including an award-winning newspaper (The Mancunion), a radio station (Fuse FM) and a TV channel.
